New Rogue Wave Album Announced: Permalight
hey. i know it's been a long time. but we're back and up to operating on almost complete body functionality. we're feeling up up up up up.
and why?
we've spent most of this year working on our new record called permalight. after all the trials and tribulations, we're happy to say the record is complete and will be released through brushfire records on march 2, 2010. it was recorded with the ever-so-talented dennis herring in oxford, mississippi. as i mentioned several months back, this record promises to be a more visceral kind of album. so make sure you're wearing some good shoes.
once the record is out next year, extensive touring of the US and beyond will follow. i can't tell you how excited we are to get back out on the road next year and start playing all of these new songs live. kind of forgotten how much we miss being able to play.
well that's it for now. we can't wait to share the record with you! i know march is kind of a long time from now. but time moves pretty fast. pretty soon you will be saying you can't believe christmas is already over, you just got finished digesting your thanksgiving chocolate cranberry duck sauce. and then before you know it, it's march.
stay tuned.

Alive and Well

Although it may seem as though we have disappeared into the ether, don't fret! We are still here and working very hard on our new record. It does not yet have a title, but that will be coming pretty soon (you can even send us some ideas to MySpace if you feel like it). We have been recording in Oxford, Mississippi since April and we are just about ready to start mixing.
The reason it has taken us so long is that after I injured my neck last fall, I knew that if I was even able to keep this band together, it was really important that we try new things in the studio (my hand is still sort of numb, so I had to re-work how I play guitar and other instruments). As we have found out, this takes time! But we are really excited to share this new record with you and it is my hope that it will be something you guys are into.
What does it sound like? Hmm. That is hard to say at this point. But I do know that I used to feel the weight of the world on my shoulders when we were recording the last couple of records and this time we are just having fun. Yah, the record sounds, for lack of a better word, fun. Our records have traditionally been sort of boring with respect to the shaking of the booty, so we have tried this time to make a more body-moving album. Boom boom boom. It's not all dance party USA or anything, but it promises to be more rhythmic for sure.
Our loving record label is telling me we are shooting for a release date of early next year. So, I'm hoping that means we will be touring this spring. We'll be sure to keep you posted.

Down, But Not Out

To those that have inquired about what is going on and why so many shows have been getting canceled, I just wanted to let you know that I am not dead nor presently dying
When we got home from touring at the end of August, I took a few days off, then played a solo show opening for Nada Surf. 2 days later, I woke up with the worst pain of my life, coming from my shoulder. An ER doctor came to my house (because I couldn't move) and shot me up with a cortisone injection, Dilaudid, and Valium. Nothing happened. The pain stayed the same. I was pinned to the floor with nothing but sheer pain in my shoulder. Next, they actually wheeled an X-ray machine into my living room and took images of my heart and lungs because they thought I could be having an aneurysm or a heart attack. Nothing there either. Turns out, I somehow slipped 2 discs in my neck. 2 evil discs, pressing on my spinal cord like it's a buzzer in a game show.
Awesome.
So, I've spent the past month trying to fight through this mess. Unfortunately, the pain has been radiating down my right arm like bolts of white-hot electricity and I have lost feeling in a few fingers. My hope is that this will go away soon and those pudgy little discs will scamper back in between the vertebrae from which they used to so snuggly fit. Until then, I need to take it easy and wait for the storm to pass. For those of you that were coming to see us play in September and October, I'm very sorry we had to cancel. And for those of you that had unfettered faith in the free market, I'm sorry about the current state of your portfolio.
On the brighter side, there have been some good things that have come my way in the past couple of weeks. I've been reading the Lazarus Project by Aleksander Hemon. It makes me want to become a Jewish anarchist (I'm already half way there). I saw Jose Gonzales at Yoshi's in Oakland. Hands down one of the best performers I've seen in years. If he comes to your town, don't be dumb and miss it. The new Deerhunter record is a broken ambient thrill machine. Obama is up up up in the polls. And tonight, just before I went to bed, I turned on the TV and watched Jenny Lewis sing on Conan. Oh, Jenny Lewis. A voice that could launch 1,000 ships
